<  PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE, NATIONAL PARK

Padre Island National Seashore separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna Madre, one of a few hypersaline lagoons in the world. The park protects 70 miles of coastline, dunes, prairies, and wind tidal flats teeming with life. It is a safe nesting ground for the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and a haven for over 380 bird species. It also has a rich history, including the Spanish shipwrecks of 1554.

BIRDING  >

With six sites along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail: the Joan and Scott Holt Paradise Pond, Port Aransas Nature Preserve, South Jetty, Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, UTMSI Wetlands Education Center, and Mustang Island State Park, Port ‘A’ hosts many must-see lookouts for avid birders and wildlife photographers. Boardwalks and observation towers are built over wetlands with vegetation pockets specially designed to attract birds.

Port Aransas fishing has been iconic ever since the early days of sport fishing. And while it originally made its name for its once incredible Tarpon fishery (when we say made a name, we mean that quite literally – it actually used to be called Tarpon), it is now home to a fleet of boats targeting Redfish and Trout in the bays and Tuna and more offshore.
